Communications Staff

Based in the Cambridge / Boston, MA area
(mostly remote)

 

The Harvard Graduate Students Union (HGSU), UAW Local 5118 seeks a part-time (15 hours per week) Communications Staff member to support the union's internal and external communications. This position is mostly remote with occasional in-person attendance at meetings, trainings, or events in the Cambridge/Boston area. Some evening and weekend availability is required based on union activities. This person will help maintain a consistent and engaging public presence and is comfortable creating digital content, managing web platforms, and collaborating with elected union leaders and staff on communication strategy. 

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and regularly update the HGSU-UAW website.
  • Help create graphics, flyers, social media content, and other visual materials using platforms such as Canva.
  • Draft and edit written communications, including website content and union emails.
  • Assist with media outreach by preparing op-eds and press materials and coordinating with journalists when appropriate.
  • Support communication strategies for union events, contract negotiations, and membership drives.
  • Archive all communication materials and maintain organized digital records.
  • Perform related communications duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Experience with digital graphics and related visual materials.
  • Familiarity with website content management systems (WordPress).
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with volunteer members of the Communications Committee.
  • Commitment to the values of labor unions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with labor unions, advocacy groups, or nonprofits.
  • Experience with media, press, or public relations.
  • Photography, videography, or basic media editing experience.
  • Knowledge of accessibility best practices for digital communications.
  • Have been a United Auto Workers member in good standing for the last year.

Terms of Employment:
This position is represented by UAW Staff United (USU) and includes an annual salary of $27,988, paid monthly, as well as healthcare (including dental and vision coverage), paid time off, sick time, and retirement benefits. We are looking for someone who can start immediately, with the position lasting until June of 2027, or December of 2026 should the right candidate only be available until then.
