Bookkeeper
Based in New York City, NY
The NewsGuild of New York is looking for an experienced Bookkeeper to assist in managing our day-to-day accounting and finance requirements. Confidentiality, excellent organizational skills and accuracy are important qualifications for this position, as well as good customer relations and the ability to communicate clearly. The ideal candidate for this position is a skilled multi-tasker, is reliable and is committed to consistently meeting deadlines. Familiarity with unions and labor organizations is a plus.
Bookkeeper responsibilities and duties
- Balance and maintain accurate ledgers
- Match purchase orders with invoices
- Coordinate bank deposits and report financial results on a regular basis to management
- Monitor office expenses and tally and enter cash receipts
- Pay vendor invoices and track bank account balances
- Process payroll and expenses for staff each week through QuickBooks
- Per Capita payments must be calculated on monthly basis
- Schedule monthly credit card payments in a timely manner
- Expenses should be recorded and paid in a timely manner
- Provide reports on dues payments received
- Inter-fund revenue and expenses should be recorded in accordance to budget
- Distribute petty cash as needed.
- Assist accountants with monthly reporting and audits
- Perform other assigned duties as necessary
Required skills
- Experience working in accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll and payroll reports, disability and retirement benefit payments
- Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
- Extensive experience with data entry, record keeping and computer operation
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Excel and QuickBooks
- Experience in services related to payroll and benefits such as onboarding, writing checks and submitting payroll taxes
Salary and benefits:
This is a part-time position offering 21 hours of work a week, based in New York. Must be able to be physically in-office in New York City. This position is covered by the Local Representatives Guild, our staff union. The contractual hourly salary minimum for this position is $43.72. Pro-rated benefits include 401(k), sick days, paid holidays where applicable, medical and dental.
