Temporary Membership Supervisor

LOCATION: Oakland, California

RESPONSIBILITIES: This manager-level position works under the supervision of, and reports to, the Director for Membership. The person in this position is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Local 1021 Membership Department and first-line supervision of the Membership department staff. The primary responsibilities of the Membership Department Supervisor/Team Leader include but are not limited to:

  • Managing the accounting and processing of membership dues revenue and voluntary political contributions.
  • Managing the Membership Department staff, including conducting regular supervisory meetings, training and mentoring staff, evaluating employees’ performance, establishing deadlines, and monitoring staff compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Troubleshooting, improving, and creating workflows.
  • Supervising and overseeing the maintenance of accurate and current membership data,
  • including working closely with Local 1021’s I.T. staff to continually improve the union’s
  • use of UnionWare membership database software.
  • Fulfilling (or assigning someone to fulfill) requests for reports or data files extracted from the UnionWare membership database using either Microsoft Excel or pre-defined reports.
  • Responding (or assigning someone to respond) to inquiries from Local 1021 members, elected leaders, and staff regarding union dues or other departmental areas of responsibility.
  • Communicating with the employers where our members work, to implement or change payroll deductions of union dues and to obtain member data.
  • Managing distribution of union membership materials.
  • Participate in month-end closing and preparation of monthly and quarterly reports.
  • Participate in the Union’s compliance with state, federal, and accounting requirements.
  • Back up supervision of the Local 1021 Member Resource Center.

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Supervisory/managerial experience is required.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills (and a willingness to learn more) are required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Work experience in a labor union or in the non-profit sector, and some work with multi-user databases are preferred.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

  • Salary range $123,103.63 – $141,569.17 depending on experience.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Salaried position; may require nonstandard work hours and/or weekend/holiday work.
  • Occasional travel to meetings, primarily in Northern California, is required.
  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license; must pass a DMV check and have a good driving record; must be able to carry auto insurance that covers business driving (minimum coverage of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per incident of bodily injury liability/$50,000 property damage liability, and list SEIU Local 1021 as an “additional insured” or “interested party” in order to trigger notification in the event the policy is cancelled); and must possess an automobile for business use.
