Local 802 is the largest local union of professional musicians in the world with jurisdiction covering the greater New York City area. We unite to fight for the common interests of all musicians by advancing industry standards that dignify our labor and honor, and enrich our art. This mission is achieved through organizing and collective bargaining as well as through legislative and political action.
The Director of Field Services supervises organizing staff and manages departmental business.
Primary responsibilities
- Design internal and external organizing programs with an emphasis on developing and leveraging grassroots union member activism to raise industry standards
- Maintain current information on labor, organizing, and industry trends with the ability to evaluate the impact on working musicians
- Identify organizing opportunities in New York’s music industry
- Train and direct staff to increase the Local’s organizing capacity
- Plan and implement internal organizing and contract campaigns
- Seek out and develop rank-and-file leaders and committees
- Liaise with member negotiating committees
- Work with union leadership and senior staff to ensure full participation in organizing initiatives and activities
- Work with Chief of Staff to create campaign messaging and material
Primary qualifications
- Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of union and community organizing
- Bachelor’s degree, 7-10 years of experience including two years of supervisory experience
- Demonstrated success in providing direction and leadership of union organizing campaigns
- Knowledge of and experience with collective bargaining, labor law, grievance procedures, contract administration, and organizational management
- Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills
- Microsoft Office 365 applications and social media skills required
- Familiarity with the performing arts is desirable but not required
Salary and benefits
Position is full-time and at-will. Salary range of $80,000 – $95,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits include medical insurance, 401(k), defined benefit pension, and paid time off.
