The union has approximately 450 staff in sixteen offices from Boston to Miami. 32BJ SEIU represents over 185,000 property service workers including janitors, security officers, airport workers, and food service employees in 13 states and Washington, D.C. 32BJ is an affiliate of SEIU, the Service Employees International Union, which has 2 million members dedicated to raising industry standards and making life better for all working families and communities.

As a 32BJ Organizer, you will be part of a team of staff and members who support workers in their fight to form a union in their workplace. Organizers report to an Organizing Team Leader or Lead Organizer. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducting broad and intensive outreach efforts to non-union workers, including worksite and home visits to workers;
  • Building one-on-one relationships with workers and establishing trust;
  • Identifying and developing worksite leaders to guide and lead their organizing campaign;
  • Conducting group meetings with workers to discuss and plan organizing campaigns;a
  • Motivating individual workers and groups of workers to take collective public action;
  • Engaging workers in broader union efforts to bring pressure to bear on the industry as a whole.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
The ideal candidate will bring previous experience in labor union organizing. A demonstrated commitment to social justice is required. While no one candidate will possess every quality outlined for this position, the successful candidate will bring many of the following professional skills and personal attributes:

  • Able to set, own and deliver on own goals that contribute to the success of their organizing campaign
  • History of organizing workers successfully through building trust, developing worksite leaders/organizing committee, and public workplace actions
  • Develops and builds relationships across lines of difference and power; demonstrates self awareness of their own biases and seeks other perspectives
  • Bilingual in one or more of the following languages is preferred: Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Arabic
  • Organizers are required to drive and have a vehicle (there is a brief grace period after hiring) – current policy provides weekly car allowance

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

  • This position is full-time and is based in the New York metro area
  • This position is largely field based, with many in-person and Zoom meetings as well as events
  • This position requires regular traveling to worksites/events and participating in events, marches and demonstrations.
  • This position may require hours outside normal business hours, including some nights, weekends and holidays.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The salary for this role is $ 67,517.34. 32BJ offers a generous benefits package that includes full employer-paid medical, dental, prescription and vision plan (for full-time employees and their qualified dependents) and retirement benefits, including a defined benefit pension plan and 401K. 32BJ offers paid time off including three weeks’ vacation, eleven holidays, twelve sick days and four personal days. The union currently offers a remote work policy of one remote day per week at the discretion of the manager.
