Assistant Communications Director

Based in Upper Marlboro, MD

 

The IAM Union (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers), one of North America’s largest and most influential labor unions representing 600,000 working people, is seeking a dynamic, strategic and highly driven Assistant Communications Director to help lead and execute high-impact communications that advance worker power and amplify the voice of our membership.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Serve as a highly accessible communications co-leader for IAM staff, leadership, departments, media, and external partners—responsive across phone, email, and in-person, including after hours and weekends as needed. 
  2. Work hand-in-hand with the Communications Director to strategically plan and execute department priorities and leadership initiatives. 
  3. Carry out the priorities and directives of the International President through clear, effective communications strategies and messaging. 
  4. Oversee and manage a team of 12+ communications professionals, including assigning work, setting expectations and coaching staff to ensure success. 
  5. Collaborate across departments and territories to align communications strategies with organizational goals, campaigns, and initiatives. 
  6. Support and help drive media strategy, positioning IAM leadership and membership in local, national, international and trade media. 
  7. Help lead communications trainings at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center and across IAM territories and state councils. 
  8. Manage multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously while delivering high-quality work on time. 
  9. Respond rapidly to emerging issues with sound judgment and strong execution. 
  10. Travel multiple times a month, including on short notice, to support events, campaigns and organizational priorities. 

Qualifications:

  1. Understanding of the IAM Union, its membership, and the broader labor movement. 
  2. Proven ability to develop and execute strategic communications plans that advance organizational priorities. 
  3. Demonstrated leadership experience managing and developing teams, with a focus on coaching and accountability. 
  4. Strong working knowledge across communications disciplines, including video, writing/editing, web, social media, media relations, and graphic design. 
  5. Strategic thinker with the ability to assess challenges, conceptualize solutions, and implement effective plans. 
  6. Self-starter with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet tight deadlines, and adapt in fast-paced environments. 
  7. Experience bringing forward innovative ideas to grow audience reach and engagement. 
  8. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships across departments and with external stakeholders. 
  9. High level of discretion and professionalism in handling confidential and sensitive information. 
  10. Willingness and ability to maintain a high level of accessibility and flexibility, including frequent travel and off-hours responsiveness.
  11. This is a fully in-office position; candidates must be able to work on-site at the IAM Union’s Upper Marlboro, Md., headquarters and collaborate in person on a daily basis.
