Union Representative
Based in Tukwila, WA
Office and Professional Employees International Union Local 8 is seeking applicants for an experienced Union Representative. The position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement and is based out of Local 8’s Tukwila office.
OPEIU Local 8 is a progressive, growing union representing over 8,500 administrative, professional, human services and health care employees in the private and public sectors throughout Washington State.
The successful candidate MUST HAVE THESE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Recent and significant experience negotiating collective bargaining agreements.
- Thorough understanding of federal and state laws pertaining to collective bargaining and workers’ rights.
- Experience administrating public and private employees’ contracts.
- Ability to independently process grievances.
- Ability to write clearly and speak effectively and persuasively.
- Ability to write and interpret contract language.
- Ability to work well under pressure and interact with a wide variety of people in situations that are often adversarial.
- Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Computer literacy including the Microsoft Office suite and use of the internet.
- Knowledge of issues affecting working people.
- A Washington driver’s license, reliable automobile and auto insurance coverage.
- Willingness to work long hours, including some weekends and evenings. Some travel around Washington State may be necessary.
- Spanish fluency is highly desirable.
DUTIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
- Serve as chief spokesperson in labor negotiations.
- Preparation of contract proposals and the formulation of bargaining strategies.
- Contract administration, grievance resolution, counseling and advising members and Shop Stewards.
- Writing professional member communications.
- Preparation and presentation of educational and informational programs.
- Interaction with employer representatives, attorneys and elected officials.
- Internal organizing, member mobilization, contract and community campaigns.
- Legislative and political action.
- Participation in labor, community and political affairs.
Compensation for this exempt position includes placement on a wage scale ($88k – 135k), plus an $7,800/year auto allowance, $1,500/year communication allowance, and $2,000/year in other reimbursements, a pension, a defined contribution plan with 8% employer contribution, fully paid family medical, dental, vision. The employer also provides life insurance, short- and long-term disability, and pays the employee portion of the WA PFML premium. Employees receive 15 days of vacation leave, a total of 4 personal days and 15 paid holidays each calendar year. Bilingual employees may receive an additional $80/week differential.
