Pay: Starting annual salary for this position is $76,128.44 negotiable based upon experience.

The Director, Communications & Technology leads and actively contributes to the work of the Communications and IT Departments at the direction of the Senior Director, advancing initiatives that align with ONA’s strategic plan. This role manages projects and initiatives that communicate ONA’s value to member’s, future-members, and the public, while advocating for nurses & health professionals and the patients and communities they serve. It combines strategic leadership and hands-on responsibilities in communications – including traditional and social media, strategic messaging, and crisis communications in a union environment – and technology operations, including technical support, database administration, software, and systems analysis. The Director fosters collaboration supports staff and members, while driving initiatives that advance ONA’s mission and impact.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Communications and Marketing

  • Helps to create, review, evaluate, and revise the philosophy and overall strategy of the Communications Department
  • Develops long and short-range goals for the Communications Department based on the Strategic Plan.
  • Prepares and submits annual budget requests for program areas and manages approved budget.
  • Takes initiative to identify and act on new opportunities related to Communications to enhance results and minimize problems. 
  • Create communications collateral for units and ONA.
  • Point person for media training, press releases and media statements, media coordination, and messaging.
  • Work closely with the communications coordinator to:
    • Analyze social media key performance indicators to strategize social media content and timing. 
    • Strategize content for ONA publications. 
  • Lead on new member onboarding
  • Collaborates with other departments on issues related to program responsibilities or overall operation of the Association.
  • Assists staff and volunteer groups to promote the work of the organization.
  • Assists staff and volunteer groups with public relations activities and publications in the context of collective bargaining.
  • Develops and implements strategies utilizing all types of media feasible, including press releases, electronic announcements, brochures, fliers, interviews, polls, etc., to increase the visibility of the organization and the profession of nursing.
  • Promotes nursing and the organization through identified events. 
  • Works with the appropriate staff, volunteers, and consultants to coordinate the overall look of all paper and electronic information disseminated by the organization.
  • Develops, procures, and markets promotional items to benefit the organization.
  • Develops and implements tracking systems to quantify the effectiveness of individual projects.
  • Maintains the brand of the organization and Foundation. 

Publications Development

  • Develops an annual editorial plan for Ohio Nurses Review and Ohio Nurse Newsletter.
  • Plans and oversees the gathering of content, provides art direction, edits and oversees the coordination and production of Ohio Nurses Review four times per year.
  • Plans, and oversees the gathering of content, provides art direction, edits, and oversees the coordination and production of the Ohio Nurse publication four times per year. 
  • Manages the newsletter distribution process and performs systematic evaluation of it to improve quality and cost-effectiveness. 
  • Works with vendors in the production and printing process as well as represents the organization in negotiations with printing firms and other vendors. Maintains positive relationships with vendors or suppliers. 

Event Planning

  • Responsible for overall coordination for the Biennial Convention, including event budget, event schedule, hotel coordination, exhibitor coordination, technology and A/v coordination, food and beverage selection, and organization staff utilization. 
  • Assists with planning, implementing, and evaluating special events such as Nurses Day at the Statehouse and the Nurses’ Choice Awards.
  • Works with ONA staff members and volunteers to design, plan, coordinate, communicate, and implement identified events. 
  • Responsible for identifying, soliciting, and following up with those who do agree to participate as sponsors, exhibitors, advertisers for organization events, publications, etc. 
  • Develops and implements tracking systems to quantify the effectiveness of individual projects.

Technology

  • Administrator responsible for design, usability, and functionality of the membership database, and all platforms utilized by ONA currently or in the future.
  • Strategic implementation of technology to provide cutting-edge support of the organizations’ communications and membership growth strategies. 
  • Responsible for training organization staff on how to use the database to successfully perform their job functions. 
  • Identifies and implements new functions for the database.
  • Set up new accounts and computers for ONA staff. 
  • Serve as administrator for ONA’s Office 365 account
  • Point of contact for systems integrated coordination
  • Point of contact for IT, AV, and any additional software account managers. 
  • Administrator of the organization’s website, responsible for maintaining the home page quality usability and integrity of content. 
  • Direct, develop, and write new content, updating as needed. 
  • Art directs graphics and post files to the server.
  • Ensures the site is usable for members and information is easy to find
  • Updates the News sections frequently
  • Ensures security for the Members-only section

Other Duties

  • Participates in staff meetings and other required meetings and seminars 
  • Assists in the coordination and preparation for the annual Convention.
  • Attends, participates, and takes ownership of assigned responsibilities during the Convention.
  • Submits time electronically per organization policy.
  • Submits credit card statements, if necessary, by the deadlines established.
  • Respects computer and laptop service requests and responds timely when action is required. 
  • Provides information on the intranet calendar when out of the office.
  • Maintains documents in a format that makes them readily accessible to other staff in accordance with office policy.
  • Follow through on all communications intended for public release is to be reviewed by the Director of Communications. 
  • Maintain confidentiality of organization communications, IT systems, and member information in compliance with data protection and cybersecurity standards. 
  • Travels throughout Ohio. Travels nationally occasionally. Overnight trips occasionally
  • Other duties assigned. 

Typical Physical Requirements

  • Regularly uses a telephone and e-mail system for communication
  • The person in this position frequently communicates with coworkers and organization contracts who have inquiries. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. 
  • The person in the position frequently operates a computer and other office productively machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
  • Sedentary work – Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequency or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Involves sitting most of the time.

Qualifications and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience, which would likely produce the necessary knowledge and abilities, is qualifying.

  • BA or BS in communication, marketing, or a related field.
  • 4-5 years of experience in marketing or communications.
  • Current Ohio Driver’s License.
