Job Description:
As our Union Organizer, you'll be in the field, online, at worksites, in meetings, and everywhere public service workers need to hear the union message. You'll be part of a collaborative team but trusted to make your own schedule, hustle hard, and bring creative ideas to the table. You'll recruit new members, Identify workplace Issues, and help our members turn problems into collective action. This is more than a job, It's a calling to empower working people to stand together.

You'll work closely with the rest of the union staff team, but you'll also need to be a self- starter - someone who can see a problem, make a plan, communicate your vision, and get workers moving to solve it.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Recruit New Members: Have face-to-face conversations with public service workers, explain the power of joining AFSCME, and sign 'em up→ re-engage on follow up organizing.
  • Identify & Develop Worksite Leaders: Spot the natural leaders, develop their skills, and help them become union champions who can organize their co-workers and push for change,
  • Worksite Visits & Issue Identification: Spend time at worksites talking with employees, identifying workplace issues, and turning issues into organizing campaigns.
  • Presentations & Public Speaking: Help lead New Employee Orientation sessions, speak at worksite meetings, and even present in front of City Council or Commissioners Court when workers need a voice.
  • Member Communications & Outreach: Work with the Field & Comms Director to create flyers, digital content, action alerts, and worksite messaging using tools like Canva, Action Network, and texting platforms.
  • Organizational Capacity Building: Collaborate with union leadership to build our internal structure, ensuring every worksite has active, trained leaders who mobilize co- workers and build power from the ground up.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with fellow organizers, our Business Manager, and union staff to ensure all work supports a unified vision for building power at AFSCME Local 1624.
  • Track & Report Work: Keep organized records of conversations in VAN, recruitment efforts, worksite issues, and member actions. You'll report back regularly so we can adjust strategy and keep growing.

Qualifications Preferences:

  • Organizing Experience: Whether it's union organizing, community organizing, campaign work, or volunteer management - you know how to move people to action.
  • Strong Commitment to the Labor Movement: You believe unions change lives and you can clearly explain why they matter to someone who's never been in one.
  • Public Speaking Confidence: Whether it's 1-on-1 or in front of a crowd, you can speak clearly and persuasively in English & Spanish about workplace power and worker rights.
  • Leadership Development: You know how to identify natural leaders, build trust, and help them step up to organize their worksites.
  • Adapt to Technology: Comfortable using/learning tools like Action Network, VAN, Canva, Excel, and texting platforms to help drive campaigns.
  • Self-Starter Energy: You work independently, manage your own time, and take initiative — all while staying accountable to your team.
  • Team Player Vibes: you understand the power of collaboration and know that our wins are collective wins.
  • Flexible Schedule: Willingness to work some irregular hours, evenings, and weekends to meet workers where they are.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) MUST: Spanish proficiency is major in our diverse workforce.
  • Driver's License & Reliable Transportation Required: You'll be moving across the city and county to meet workers on their turf.
