Assistant General Counsel

Based in Chicago, IL

 

Our Union represents public sector employees in various industries in the Chicago and surrounding suburbs. We are dedicated to maintaining our long-standing commitment to excellent service to our members. We are seeking a highly motivated attorney to join our legal department to assist and advise on legal issues relating to traditional labor and employment law. The right person for this position must be a team player with collaborative interpersonal skills. This individual must display proven ability to thrive in an environment with frequently shifting priorities.

The job requires a law degree and extensive experience in the field of labor. The job description and responsibilities of the position are as follows:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Represent members in State and Federal Court on various legal matters
  • Represent members in pre-disciplinary hearings, administrative interviews, interrogations, arbitration hearings, labor board hearings/matters before the Illinois Labor Relations Board (representation petitions, DFR, Unfair Labor Practice Charges), administrative boards (i.e., Cook County Sheriff’s Merit Board, City of Chicago Human Resources Board, Cook County Clerk’s Personnel Review board)
  • Responsible for providing in-house counsel on labor and employment-related matters, which may include, but are not limited to:
    • Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) and negotiations
    • Wrongful Termination
    • Wage, hour laws and overtime standards
    • Title VII, FMLA, ADA, FSLA, IWPCA, OSHA, FFCRA, etc.
    • Policy and employment agreements
    • Privacy Rights
    • Workers’ Compensation
    • Workplace safety
  • Advise union representatives on interpretation of the Local’s bylaws and the IBT Constitution
  • Represent the Local in collective bargaining negotiations and mediations
  • Review documentation upon request from Union representatives, including but not limited to, settlement agreements, new Employer policies/procedures, resignation agreements, last chance agreements, and newly negotiated collective bargaining agreements
  • Handles administrative legal matters, including but not limited to, delegate elections and bylaw amendment votes, while participating in contract campaigns
  • Educates clients and stakeholders on legal matters, policies and procedures
  • Assists in various miscellaneous legal matters
  • Must have reliable transportation

Minimum Education Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school required.
  • 3 to 4 years of experience in litigation, labor or alternative dispute resolution
  • Must be licensed and in good standing to practice law in the State of Illinois.

  • Experience and training necessary to enforce contracts and conduct contract negotiations;
  • Ability to work well with a wide variety of people;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously;
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in complex situations;
  • Ability to make decisions and pivot quickly and fluidly, think practically in solutions-oriented manner
  • Strong analytical capabilities and judgment
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills

Technical Skills:

  • Thorough knowledge of MS-Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Internet Explorer, and Outlook
